What is...
 Network Marketing?

Also known as MLM (multi-Level Marketing) or Referral Marketing.

It is essentially a means of distributing products on a 'word of mouth' basis, without the need for advertising.  And attached to it is usually a compensation plan that allows ordinary people to build themselves a part-time or full-time business.

Often widely misunderstood, Network Marketing is growing at a rapid rate.  It started in America back in the 1930's and has been gradually gaining strength in the 1980's and 1990's.  It is now seen by more and more mainstream companies as a cost effective method of marketing.  It's popularity is spreading globally and here in the UK, is seen as one of the major factors driving the Direct Sales sector.

It usually involves selling a product or service and receiving a small up-front commission and an on-going commission (residual income).   More commissions are usually available (depending on the company's commission structure) and in particular by building teams of people who also want to build their own business.  You can earn smaller commissions on the products/ services that they sell too.  As a result, with plenty of work and after a period of time, this residual income can be built up to substantial levels.

"The richest people in the world look for and build networks, everyone else looks for work."

Do not be misled, however, by over-enthusiastic sales people who might tell you it's the quick way to riches.  It's not.  A good company will have you understand from the start that it's NOT a get-rich-quick scheme and that you'll have to put a lot of time & effort into building your business - and treat it like a proper business.

If you're a 'go-getter' and you like to be busy, you should do well.  This type of business is not for lazy people - you have to learn quickly and work effectively - after all you'll be selling two things: 1) products and/or services 2) an opportunity.  Try to figure out what techniques work and which ones are best for you.  If you need to learn new skills, do it.  If you need to set yourself targets, do it.  You are your own boss and whether you succeed or not is down to you!

How can you get involved?  Most people who join the industry do so on a part-time basis, while at the same time holding down a part or full-time job, a business or even a career.  Some will work faster than others, some will understand what is required quicker than others, but 4 or 5 years should be the least amount of time you're looking to invest in this type of business (for reasons explained in the 'Training' section).

Do your research and find the right company to join.  Then, with patience and hard work, time will win out in the end...
